Iceland’s award winning Luxury Mince Pies, redeveloped for Christmas 2018 to contain no palm oil, are to be sold in Selfridges stores. The news comes following Iceland’s commitment to end the use of palm oil as an ingredient in all own-label food by the end of 2018.
Iceland made the ethical decision to demonstrate to the food and retail industries that it is possible to reduce the demand for palm oil by seeking alternative ingredient solutions.
Growing demand for palm oil for use in food products, cosmetics and biodiesel is devastating tropical rainforests across South East Asia. In Indonesia and Malaysia, where expanding palm oil and wood pulp plantations are a major driver of deforestation, many species are being threatened with extinction, including the orangutan, already critically endangered.
Iceland’s food development team has redeveloped the recipe for the famous mince pies without using palm oil as an ingredient, while maintaining the luxurious and indulgent taste which the pies are known for.
