On the 14th October, Iceland will launch a new initiative to reduce food waste partnering with the apps Olio and Gander. Gander is an app that allows people to browse reduced items in their area online, maximising sales and reducing waste. Since 2019, Gander has saved 32.9 million food items from going to waste, leading to a CO2e saving of 34.7k tonnes. So as well as benefitting our customers, this is also hugely positive for the planet, which is why Gander was nominated for an Earthshot prize in both 2023 and 2024.
Olio has been one of Iceland’s biggest redistribution partners since 2022, and with eight million users worldwide it has a wide consumer base of people looking for deals. Olio and Gander have partnered up so that Iceland’s products will be advertised on both sites to get maximum reach.
For the initial trial, four stores within the Bristol area will be involved. These are Avonmead Food Warehouse, and the Iceland stores at Emerson’s Green, Southmead and Hartcliffe. If you are in this area you can download either the Olio or Gander app to shop yellow sticker items, and then come into store to purchase.
