A new partnership between Iceland Foods and local sharing app Olio is giving shoppers a fun way to stretch their food budgets further, while also tackling waste.
The new £2 ‘Lucky Dip’ bags are made up of food items from Iceland stores that are nearing their sell-by date – helping to reduce waste and provide shoppers with big savings at the same time.
Whether it’s fresh fruit and veg, store cupboard staples, or tasty deli items, each Lucky Dip bag contains a mystery selection of at least eight items.
The initiative is designed to support households in cutting costs during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, while making use of good food that might otherwise go to waste. It builds on Olio’s mission to make it easier for people to save money and do their bit for the environment.
Tessa Clarke, co-founder and CEO of Olio, said: “Millions of families are feeling the pinch right now, especially as the party and festive season approaches, and food waste is still a huge problem.
“Our partnership with Iceland is about giving people an easy way to save money, without compromising on quality. The Lucky Dip bags are fun, practical and full of value, and we can’t wait to see what people find in theirs.”
The bags are available to reserve through the Olio app, and can be collected in participating Iceland stores nationwide and paid for at the till.
How it works
- Open the Olio app
- Claim a Lucky Dip bag from your nearest Iceland store on the home screen
- Head into store at the collection time and show your order confirmation screen (in the app) to any member of staff
- Pay for your Lucky Dip bag at the till
- Enjoy your Lucky Dip treats!
Stuart Lendrum, Director of Product, Process and Sustainability at Iceland Foods said: “Our Lucky Dip bags have already proven to be a great way for families to save money without compromising on quality. By taking the scheme with Olio nationwide, we’re making sure every Iceland shopper can unlock fantastic value for just £2 a bag.
“This national rollout marks a huge step forward in our mission to cut food waste and help people save money, making Iceland the first retailer to offer a truly end-to-end solution from discounting to redistribution.”
The Lucky Dip launch is part of Olio’s Save more, Waste less money-saving campaign, which started on 23 September and aims to raise awareness of how Olio is helping people reduce waste and save money, whether through free food from local businesses, local sharing of food or household items, or partnerships like this one. Alongside the Lucky Dip bags, the campaign also spotlights Olio’s new Reduced Food listings with Iceland, which give shoppers real-time updates on yellow sticker discounts in their local store via the Olio app.
Olio users give away the equivalent of £5 million worth of food each month, and the addition of the Lucky Dip feature offers yet another way to access affordable food with a greater impact.
